When you see Freddie Spencer trying to sell pieces of his personal racing history like his championship 1983 Honda NSR500 and his 1985 championship NSR250, you just know things can’t be going that well for one of the greatest racers of all times.

Fast Freddie who is the only rider in history to won both the 250cc and 500cc World championship in the same year, has decided to sell off these championship bikes. The bikes are so rare, that they’re the only ones in exsistence outside the Honda museum in Japan and are being sold off as a pair.

Honda has announced that it intends to build a second production plant in India in order to meet the rising demand in the world’s second largest motorcycle market. Located in western Rajasthan, the production facility will cost Honda over $100 million, but will also allow the Japanese firm to churn out an additional 600,000 units per year starting in the second half of 2011.

This new facility in western Rajasthan is just one element in Honda’s plan to increase Indian production. Honda also expects to increase production at its Haryana plant in northern India from 1.25 million units to 1.55 million unit by the end of March, with a final goal of 1.6 million units by 2011.

This production along with the Rajasthan plant will bring Honda’s total production in India up to over 2 million units, if that gives you any idea how big the Indian motorcycle market is. Sales in India were up 19% in 2009 (9 million total units sold), despite being down elsewhere in the world. Compare that to China’s 15 million units in 2009.

Honda UK announced that actor Danny John-Jules, who plays The Cat in cult classic TV series Red Dwarf, and endurance rider Graham Hoskins, are to take the ‘Iron Butts’ Challenge in aid of Sport Relief, on two Honda Transalp motorcycles. The 7,000-mile ride is scheduled to take place from February 27 to March 14, crossing from Europe into Africa, through the Middle East into Turkey and back to the UK.

The two will cover 480 miles on their shortest day and 630 miles on their longest. They will set off on their Honda Transalps from Alexandra Palace in North London on February 27, during the 2010 Motorcycle Show.

I’ve owned a Honda Fireblade for the last ten years and it has never missed a beat, so in my mind a Honda was the only real choice for this trip due to their incredible reliability, quality and range which has something for all riding needs,” Hoskins said in a release.

“We looked at a few different bikes in their range as possibilities, but the Transalp is definitely the right machine for our challenge with its great adventure riding capabilities, comfy riding position, renowned reliability, good tank range and great luggage capacity.”

49 year-old Danny John-Jules is best known for his comic role in the classic hit TV show Red Dwarf, which is as popular as ever with a new series being filmed later this year.

“This is going to be no holiday, but it will be an incredible trip and experience where we aim to raise money for Sport Relief but also promote the fun and freedom of safe adventure motorcycling,” John-Jules said. “I love crazy adventures and there’s no better reason to do something like this other than to support a worthwhile cause and encouraging more people into motorcycling, which I’m passionate about.”

To follow their progress, both Danny and Graham will post a series of blogs and images from their adventure, which you can access the following link.

Honda India plans to expand capacity to meet the company’s annual 20 percent increase in demand, a Honda official said today. However, he gave no details on the investment or the additional capacity.

We are doing an internal study on a second plant,” said Shinji Aoyama, president and chief executive of Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt, which will reach its full capacity of 1.5 million units in 2010-2011.

“We cannot let our sales stagnate, we will take a decision soon,” said Naresh Kumar Rattan, marketing and sales head.

India is the world’s second-largest market for motorcycles and scooters, with annual sales of slightly over 8 million units. More than 15 million units are sold annually in China. Honda Motorcycle expects to sell 1.25 million scooters and bikes in the current fiscal year that ends in March, and 1.5 million units next year.

Last December, unlisted Honda Motorcycle made its entry in the popular 100cc bike segment, taking on Hero Honda in which Japan’s Honda has 26 percent and India’s Munjal family about 29 percent.

The company expects sales to rise 20 percent, powered by 110cc CB Twister bike, its first offering in this category that will compete with Hero Honda’s Passion and Splendor and Bajaj Auto’s Discover DTSi.

The 190 mpg machine was inspired by the Honda CB1000R in design, only powered by a 110 cc engine, delivering just 9 bhp. Tubeless tires, maintenance free battery, viscous air filter, short muffler and half chain are just a few attributes of Honda’s latest machine. The CB Twister is available in five colors, namely Yellow, Green, Black, Red and Blue.

What’s the first thing you do if you have a Honda ANF125i motorcycle which, in stock form, is capable of delivering more than 100mpg (42.5km/l) of fuel efficiency? Why, you bung on a full set of streamliner-style bodywork of course, so that fuel-efficiency goes up to 214mpg (91km/l)!

No, seriously, fuel efficiency is important business these days. And the bike you see here – the Quest Velamobile, designed by Allert Jacobs, who’s based in the Netherlands – is just of the many possible ways that motorcycle manufacturers might look at, in the near future, in order to boost their bikes’ fuel efficiency.

‘As a designer and rider of faired recumbent bicycles, I have enjoyed the benefits of reduced air resistance. It makes cycling more energy efficient and allows you to travel faster over greater distances,’ says Jacobs. ‘A recumbent riding position is more comfortable, while adding a fairing can provide weather protection as well as speed. If one can decrease aerodynamic drag and at the same time improve comfort and energy efficiency of a bicycle, imagine what might be possible with a faster vehicle,’ he adds.

Manufacturers like NSU, Gilera, Norton, Moto Guzzi and others experimented with full-enclosed streamliner-type racing bikes before they were outlawed by the FIM in 1957. However, with their fully functional aerodynamics, such motorcycles definitely had a clear advantage in terms of being able to get up to higher top speeds. (In fact, such bikes were banned in the late-1950s because the brakes and tyres of that era couldn’t handle the higher speeds that these bikes were able to attain. And now, streamliner-type fairings may actually make a comeback on battery-powered electric racebikes in the TTXGP and other e-bike racing series…)

But coming back to the 214mpg Quest Velomobile, Jacobs wanted to use the advantages of fully-enclosed bodywork for boosting fuel-efficiency rather than outright performance, which is why he started with the Honda ANF125i that’s fitted with a single-cylinder 125cc four-stroke engine that only makes about nine horsepower.

Also, one limitation that such fully-enclosed streamlined two-wheelers have is that they can be potentially unsafe in very windy conditions. Strong winds can affect the balance of such machines, with potentially disastrous consequences. ‘Such a streamlined two-wheeler cannot be ridden in very windy conditions. I can accept this limitation as I will only use it occasionally,’ says Jacobs of his Velomobile.

For more details on how the Velomobile was built, visit Jacob’s website here

Honda launched their new 110cc CB Twister motorcycle in New Delhi today. The new bike is aimed to offer style and looks in the entry-level segment at an affordable cost. The design borrows styling cues from Honda’s premium streetfighter model, the CB1000R and it also has similar looking paint schemes available. The entry-level segment in India has shown strong growth recently and it is one segment that no manufacturer can ignore. Honda was lacking its presence in this segment and with the CB Twsiter, the company has now ventured into the 100cc-110cc market, which has been primarily dominated by Hero Honda for over two decades.

The CB Twister is powered by an all-new 110cc single cylinder engine with a high-lift camshaft and off-set crankshaft to improve its efficiency. The bike produces 9PS of power and Honda claims that the bike will return 70km per litre. The power is transmitted to the rear wheel via a four-speed gearbox and the top-of-the-line model of the Twister also features a 240mm disc brake upfront. Improving the value-for-money quotient, the CB Twister also gets tubeless tyres (first time in this segment) for added safety and lesser chances of getting stranded on the road due to a puncture – a good feature especially for the rural buyers.

The new CB Twister does look like a promising model in the entry level segment as it brings along great styling, Honda’s reliability and good fuel economy at an affordable cost. Unveiled at an introductory price-tag of Rs. 42,000 (Ex-showroom, Delhi), the actual pricing will be disclosed at the 2010 Auto Expo in New Delhi. The bike is available in five colour schemes and three variants, namely – kick-start with drum brake, self-start with drum brake and a fully loaded self-start with disc brake. Lets see Honda do the Twist!

The CB Twister is available in five colors, namely Yellow, Green, Black, Red and Blue. The base model is priced at 42,000 rupees (approx. US$902/ 612 euros/553 British pounds) and will be available in Indian showrooms by the end of February 2010.

Honda Italy has launched a new range of clothing, Honda Lifestyle Collection, produced by GAS, a leading casual wear designer and long-time partner of HRC’s Honda MotoGP team.

Presented in Milan at EICMA 2009 – the most prestigious motorcycle trade fair in Europe – and with ranges for men, women and children, Honda Lifestyle Collection offers a wide selection of items for motorcycle fans to wear and will be available across Europe from February 2010 onwards.

Mario Nicosia, director of after sales for Honda Italy, said, “Honda and GAS are based in Italy, but the importance of the market in Europe convinced us to branch out there. The new Honda Lifestyle Collection is produced with the same production qualities, sporting design and detail of every Honda.”

Claudio Grotto, President of Grotto SpA, added, “GAS has always attached great importance to quality and to the values of its brand. For a long time I have admired the motorcycle world and Honda in particular, so I’m honoured that the company has chosen us to produce this clothing line. The experience and knowledge gathered over 25 years by GAS in the world of casual wear has created a very strong product, similar to Honda.”
