I would switch the cables on the gear changing buttons, so you use the thumb to upshift/accelerate and your index to downshift/slow down.  Simple biomechanics...

The operation should work similar to the front brake: when you brake, your weight goes forward so your fingers are free and can operate properly.  That always worked well!  The cluth operation, on the other hand, has always been akward because it has been wrongly placed in motorcyles since the beginning!  When you accelerate, your thumb is free!  Use the thumb for the clutch!  We need a left handed ATV thottle like, thumb lever on all motorcycle clutches!  Send me a free one, for the idea, and win races!!!!</description>
